BURDWAN: Only a day after Trinamool Congress candidate Prabhat Chatterjee was injured in an attack in Jamuria, Trinamool candidate of Raina, Nepal Ghoroi, said he was attacked by CPM cadres at Methopara village on Tuesday.
Nepal alleged that he was campaigning with party workers at 8.30 am when he was attacked. "Near a pond, where work under the NREGA scheme was on, CPM leaders ordered us to leave. We refused. The CPM men then instigated the labourers, who hit us with rods. A party supporter Sukumar majhi fell on the ground. I was attacked when I ran to help him," he said.
Sukumar is being treated for head injuries.
Nepal filed an FIR at Madhavdihi, naming 24 persons, including local CPM leader Haripada Santra. "Our district leaders have informed Mamata Banerjee and minister Mukul Roy of the incident," he added.
He alleged that CPM supporters were beating up Trinamool workers in the presence of RAF jawans at Methopara.
Terming these allegations baseless, Raina CPM leader Shyama Pal said: "Trinamool is trying to instigate fresh violence in Raina to benefit from it before the polls."
Burdwan district magistrate Onkar Singh Meena, however, said that Raina's Trinamool candidate was neither attacked nor manhandled. "The returning officer got the complaint verified and found that some Trinamool supporters had lodged a police complaint of manhandling. Police were asked to probe it," he added.
